Kerala Pride March

Also known as Kerala Queer Pride

A statewide queer celebration of visibility, dignity, equality, community, and self-expression.

Overview

Kerala Pride March is a public LGBTQIA+ Pride event held in different parts of Kerala. It brings queer people, community organizations, supporters, artists, and allies together in a visible celebration of identity, dignity, and belonging.

The march is part of a wider programme that can include public meetings, panel discussions, film screenings, exhibitions, performances, and other community activities.

Important dates

Timing — Dates and host cities vary between editions. The programme is commonly organized around a weekend, with community discussions and cultural activities accompanying the public march.

Why is it celebrated?

Visibility — The march creates a public space where LGBTQIA+ people can express their identities and be seen as part of Kerala's wider social life.

Dignity and equality — Participants use Pride as a platform to call for equal rights, freedom from discrimination, and respect for diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

Community — The event also provides an opportunity for queer people, families, friends, organizations, and allies to meet, support one another, and build community.

History

Kerala's queer Pride movement emerged in Thrissur around the turn of the 2010s, developing from the work of queer and transgender activists and community organizations. Early marches established a public platform for LGBTQIA+ visibility and rights advocacy.

Over time, the event has moved between cities including Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kochi, Kollam, Malappuram, and Thiruvananthapuram. This rotating character has helped make Kerala Pride a statewide movement rather than an event associated with only one city.
