Multidisciplinary arts & cultural
Also known as KGAF
Mumbai’s multidisciplinary arts festival brings visual art, music, theatre, literature and heritage into public spaces.
The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is a large multidisciplinary cultural festival centred on the historic Kala Ghoda precinct of South Mumbai. Its programme brings art and cultural activities into galleries, libraries, museums, streets, maidans and other public spaces.
The festival includes visual arts, music, dance, theatre, literature, cinema, food, workshops, heritage walks, urban design and architecture, children's activities and street installations.
Celebrating the arts — The festival creates a shared setting for visual and performing arts, literature, cinema, design and creative workshops.
Preserving the precinct — The festival is closely connected with efforts to maintain Kala Ghoda as a heritage arts district and to support restoration and improvement of its historic surroundings.
Public access to culture — Its programming places cultural experiences in streets and other accessible venues, allowing people to encounter art beyond conventional gallery and theatre settings.
The Kala Ghoda Association was established in the late 20th century by art galleries, patrons and concerned citizens to maintain and preserve the heritage of the Kala Ghoda area. The association subsequently developed the arts festival as a multidisciplinary street-based cultural event for the precinct.
Over time, the festival expanded from a relatively small programme into a major citywide cultural gathering, using venues such as galleries, museums, libraries, streets and open grounds. Its association with heritage restoration has remained an important part of its development.
