Also known as Guruvayoor Ekadasi
A major Vaishnava observance at Guruvayur Temple, marked by fasting, worship, lamps and devotional music.
Guruvayur Ekadasi is a major annual Hindu observance centred on the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayur, Kerala. It falls on the Ekadasi, the eleventh lunar day, during the bright fortnight of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam.
The observance is known for extended temple worship, fasting, devotional recitation, lamp offerings and opportunities for darshan of Guruvayurappan, the temple's form of Krishna.
Devotion to Vishnu — Ekadasi is traditionally dedicated to Vishnu and is observed through restraint, prayer, remembrance and devotional practice.
Guruvayurappan — At Guruvayur, the observance is especially associated with Krishna worship and the devotional tradition surrounding Guruvayurappan.
Spiritual discipline — Fasting and wakefulness are understood by devotees as practices that encourage concentration, self-control and remembrance of the divine.
Guruvayur has developed over centuries as one of Kerala's major Krishna pilgrimage centres. Its traditions are associated with Malayalam devotional literature, temple worship and the long-standing practice of Ekadasi observance.
The Ekadasi celebration gradually developed into an extended temple festival, with lamp offerings, devotional music and continuous opportunities for worship around the central Ekadasi day. The temple's history also includes periods of destruction, rebuilding and institutional change, while the annual observance has remained part of its religious life.
