Chennai Rainbow Pride

Also known as Chennai Rainbow / Self-Respect Pride

Chennai's annual Pride and Self-Respect march celebrating LGBTQIA+ visibility, dignity and equality.

Overview

Chennai Rainbow Pride is the city's annual LGBTQIA+ Pride and Self-Respect march, held during Pride Month. It is a public community event centred on visibility, dignity, solidarity and equal treatment.

The march is part of a wider programme of Pride Month activities in Chennai, which can include cultural events, discussions, screenings, workshops and other community gatherings.

Important dates

  • Pride Month — June, with community activities held throughout the month.
  • Last Sunday of June — traditional timing for the main Chennai Rainbow / Self-Respect Pride march.

Why is it celebrated?

Visibility and dignity — The march creates a public space where LGBTQIA+ people can express identity and community openly.

Equality and inclusion — Pride also draws attention to discrimination and to the need for equal access, safety and respect in everyday life.

Self-respect — The event connects queer visibility with the broader idea of self-respect and social justice in Tamil Nadu.

History

Chennai's Pride movement emerged in the late 2000s through cooperation among local groups working on sexuality, gender identity, human rights and health. The first Chennai Rainbow Pride march established an annual public tradition that has continued through changing venues and community priorities.

The event was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and later resumed. Over time, the programme has developed beyond the march itself to include cultural, educational and community activities, while retaining its emphasis on LGBTQIA+ visibility and self-respect.
