Chandigarh LGBT Pride Walk

Also known as Garvotsav

A city pride march celebrating LGBTQ+ visibility, identity, equality and community solidarity.

Overview

The Chandigarh LGBT Pride Walk is a public pride march bringing together LGBTQ+ people, community groups, students, supporters and allies in Chandigarh. It is closely associated with Garvotsav, a wider programme of pride and awareness activities.

The walk uses public streets and gathering spaces to make LGBTQ+ identities and concerns visible while creating space for community expression, cultural performances and solidarity.

Important dates

  • February–March — The Pride Walk is generally held during this period, although the exact date varies.
  • Garvotsav — The wider pride programme may include activities before the main march.

Why is it celebrated?

Visibility — The march provides a public space for LGBTQ+ people to express identity and belonging.

Equality — Pride events draw attention to dignity, equal treatment and protection from discrimination.

Community — The gathering connects LGBTQ+ participants with allies, students, families and civic groups.

History

Chandigarh's Pride Walk emerged in the early 2010s as part of the growing network of LGBTQ+ pride events in India. The march has traditionally connected Panjab University with central Chandigarh, including Sector 17, making university and civic spaces important parts of its public setting.

Over time, the event developed alongside Garvotsav, with the wider programme incorporating discussions, cultural performances, screenings, community activities and awareness initiatives. Its focus has continued to include LGBTQ+ visibility, transgender inclusion and social equality.
